A few weeks ago my family and I went to Walt Disney World to escape the cold Toronto weather and just be kids. It was a wonderful trip, with lots to see and do while soaking up the sun in 30+ degree weather. It was a trip where I was not connected to work. This time around, it was easy as I am currently taking a break from the practice of law. I pretty much only connected online to make and update my Disney FastPass+ selections (see my FastPass+ tips in this post below). What freedom it was to not pull out my smartphone to check for messages.
It is unfortunate that when we are practising, we feel the need to always be connected. Basically, we feel that our job security is on the line. During my time practising, however, I was fortunate to have various mentors tell me that we all need to take time away from work to recharge. I was even more fortunate that I had colleagues who could “babysit” my files while I was away. Without a positive statement from someone more senior, I would have felt guilty taking time off. Without helping hands, I would have felt that I needed to stay connected.
